Retül extends partnership with USA Triathlon, Sarah Groff True at Boulder headquarters
Retül will continue its partnership with USA Triathlon, the National Governing Body for the sport of triathlon, through 2016. For the eighth consecutive year, Retül will serve as the official bike fit technology of USA Triathlon. Boulder-based Retül fitters Todd Carver, Ivan O’Gorman and Garrett Getter will provide fit services for the USA Triathlon National Team, Paratriathlon Team and development squads as well as age-group athletes attending the 2015 USA Triathlon Foundation Fantasy Camp from April 30-May 4.
Last month National Team member Sarah (Groff) True, who finished the 2014 season ranked No. 2 in the world, visited Retül headquarters in Boulder to address saddle selection and arch support concerns.
“I saw Todd back in 2009 and John Dennis in Europe last season,” True said. “I had been pretty happy with my position on the bike but last year I was dealing with some minor lower-back issues. John was able to address that by bringing me forward on the bike into a more neutral position which helped alleviate the pain I was experiencing. Going into this season I knew there were still some details I needed to address with my contact points on the bike,” True said.
Discomfort on her saddle was causing True to shift around on the bike. She also dealt with an ankle injury last season and wanted to address the arch support in her shoes.
“First we moved Sarah to a Specialized Body Geometry Phenom 155 saddle which will allow her to remain in a comfortable position and ultimately not lose power from moving around,” said Todd Carver, Chief Fit and Education Officer at Retül. “She liked the support it gave her on the rear portion of the saddle as well as its narrow nose which will help her to pedal with her knees slightly more in toward the bike. Then we moderately increased the arch support in her shoes with the Specialized Body Geometry Blues. She was riding with basically no support from the stock insoles she had, and the increased arch support will help prevent her from re-injuring the medial ankle because her arch will be less prone to collapsing.”
True was pleased with the initial adjustments. “The insoles feel great and the first impression of the saddle was positive after my first few rides,” she said. “The Retül process is incredible and has allowed me to quantify the way I feel on the bike and make adjustments in a measurable way.”
This year Retül plans to place more emphasis on educational resources for USA Triathlon’s membership base of nearly 500,000 athletes.
“We got a great response last year on the content and education we provided online and in-person to athletes and coaches, so we plan to continue that this year,” Carver said. “We also want to get the message out to athletes that the fit technology they see used with the pros is available with their local certified Retül fitter. There are about 250 fitters in the U.S. that use Retül and they are a tremendous resource.”
